The Perfect Ganesh is a play originally written by multi-award winning Terrence McNally produced in 1993. This was nominated for the Pulitzer Price. David Callandar revived this play, directed and presented it live on stage in Los Angeles, CA in 2021.
The Perfect Ganesh is a journey of two women in emotional turmoil, who go to India, where Ganesh- an elephant god offers them uplift. The action of the play spans from America to India, as the narrative explores the nature of female friendships, culture clashes, racism, homophobia, trauma and loss, and our collective search for wholeness and authenticity in a chaotic world.
This album features eight tracks from this play produced and composed by award winning singer/songwriter Kamini Natarajan. Through these eight tracks listeners explore various emotions through music – from the bright energetic opening Ganapathaye Namah track to the mystic melancholic Rudrapriya Ganesh. These eight tracks follow the main lead characters of the play through their struggles, trauma and ultimately a sense of peace.
“My challenge was to create music where emotion is the focal point. Being a singer/songwriter myself it was very tempting to throw in vocals on all tracks but that would have taken away from the drama, acting and experience of the characters of the play. I let music be the language and used sounds from India to create an experience.”- Kamini Natarajan
